How to connect WhatsApp to an API without losing your chats
Your chats live on the phone and connecting to the API does not move them. Coexistence adds the Cloud API alongside the WhatsApp Business app rather than replacing it, so the conversations stay where they are and the app keeps working.
- Chats stay on the phone, untouched
- The app keeps working throughout
- Reversible: disconnect and nothing is lost

Why did connecting to the API used to lose chats?
Because the old path was a migration rather than an addition. Registering a number on the Cloud API took it off the WhatsApp Business app, and the app was where every conversation lived. The number came back as an API endpoint with no history and no app, which is why so many businesses looked at the API once and decided against it.
That trade was real and it was the single biggest reason small businesses stayed off the official API. It also pushed people towards unofficial gateways, which kept the app working by pretending to be a linked device and put the number at risk of a ban instead.
What does Coexistence do differently?
It adds the API without removing the app. The number is registered with Meta as an API number while the WhatsApp Business app stays linked to it, so both work at once on the same number.
The conversations never move. They are on the phone, in the app, exactly where they were before, and they stay there whatever happens to the API connection afterwards. When the number first connects, Meta synchronises recent conversation history to the API side so automation is not starting from nothing, but that is a copy forward rather than a transfer. Nothing is taken off the device.
A customer message after that arrives in both places: the app on the phone and your webhook. Staff answer in the app if they want to, your system answers if it should, and both appear in the same conversation.
What exactly gets synchronised, and what does not?
Recent message history synchronises, within a window after the connection is made. It is enough for an automation or an agent to have context on an ongoing conversation rather than replying blind to someone it has never seen.
What does not synchronise is everything older, media from before the connection, and group conversations. None of that is lost. It is on the phone, in the app, readable by your staff exactly as before. It is simply not copied to the API side, because the synchronisation is a starting point for automation rather than an archive.
If you need the full history somewhere else, export it from the app. That is a separate job from connecting the number and it is worth not confusing the two.
What happens if we disconnect later?
The app carries on and the chats are still there, because they never left.
Disconnecting removes the API side of the number. The WhatsApp Business app keeps working with every conversation intact, and the business is back exactly where it started with nothing to restore. That is the safety net worth understanding before you begin: the decision is reversible in a way that the old migration never was.
The number also stays in your own Meta Business Portfolio the whole time. A provider connects it as a Tech Provider, which is a permission you grant and can withdraw, so leaving a provider does not mean recovering a number from them.
Common mistakes
- Exporting everything first out of fear. The chats are not going anywhere.
- Expecting the whole history on the API side. Synchronisation is recent context, not an archive.
- Using an unofficial gateway to keep the app working. Coexistence does it without risking a ban.
EasyCoexistence connects the number through Meta's own Coexistence flow, so the WhatsApp Business app and every conversation in it carry on untouched. From US$ 9 per number per month, falling to US$ 2 at volume, with the first 7 days free.
Frequently asked questions
