Meta Tech Provider

Can you use the WhatsApp Business app and the API on the same number?

Yes. Meta calls it Coexistence, and it is an official feature rather than a workaround. Staff keep answering on the WhatsApp Business app on the phone, the Cloud API runs on the same number at the same time, and both see the same conversations.

  • Official Meta feature, not a workaround
  • The app on the phone keeps working
  • One number, both channels, same conversations

How can one number be on both at once?

Because Meta built a mode for it. Historically this was the trade nobody wanted to make: migrating a number to the API meant the WhatsApp Business app stopped working on it, so a business with staff answering on a phone had to choose between the people who already knew the customers and the automation it wanted to add.

Coexistence removes the choice. The number is registered with Meta as an API number while the WhatsApp Business app stays linked to it. A message from a customer arrives in the app on the phone and on your API webhook, both, and a reply sent from either side appears in the conversation. Nothing is being simulated or worked around: the app and the API are two sanctioned ways into the same number.

What actually changes on the phone?

Less than people expect, and the differences are worth knowing before you connect.

Staff carry on as before: same app, same chats, same contacts, same number. What goes away is four features Meta switches off on any Coexistence number: disappearing messages, view once media, live location and broadcast lists. Group chats remain usable in the app but are outside the API, so automation cannot see them.

There is also a synchronisation step when the number first connects, which copies recent conversation history so the API side is not starting blind. It covers recent messages rather than the entire history of the number, and everything older stays on the phone where it has always been.

Does anything break if we change our mind?

No, and this is worth saying plainly because it is the fear that stops people trying.

The conversations live on the phone and always have. Disconnecting the number from the API leaves the WhatsApp Business app working exactly as it did before, with the chats intact, because nothing was moved anywhere to begin with. The API was added alongside the app rather than replacing it.

The number also stays in the business's own Meta Business Portfolio throughout. A provider connects it as a Tech Provider, which is a permission rather than ownership, so removing the provider leaves the number where it was rather than taking it along.

What do you need to make it work?

Three things, and two of them you already have.

The number has to be on the WhatsApp Business app rather than the consumer WhatsApp app, and it must not already be registered on the Cloud API elsewhere. Beyond that, you need a Meta Tech Provider to run the onboarding, because Coexistence cannot be self-served from a Meta dashboard: the connection is made through a provider's approved app.

That is where we come in. Meta's own Embedded Signup picks the portfolio, the account and the number, a code is scanned in the WhatsApp Business app to confirm it, and the number is connected in minutes. The app keeps working throughout, including while the connection is being made.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming you must choose. Coexistence exists precisely so you do not have to.
  • Expecting group chats through the API. They stay in the app and are outside the API everywhere.
  • Waiting for a Meta dashboard option. Coexistence onboarding runs through a Tech Provider.
Doing this with EasyCoexistence

EasyCoexistence connects the number through Meta's own Coexistence flow, keeps the WhatsApp Business app working, routes messages to your system and watches the connection. From US$ 9 per number per month, falling to US$ 2 at volume, with the first 7 days free.

Frequently asked questions

Is this official?

Yes. Coexistence is Meta's own feature and its own term. It is not a bridge, a linked device or a workaround.

Will staff notice a difference?

Only that four features are gone: disappearing messages, view once, live location and broadcast lists. Everything else is as before.

Do I lose my chat history?

No. It lives on the phone and stays there. Recent history is also copied to the API side when the number connects.

Can I undo it?

Yes. Disconnect the number and the app carries on exactly as before, with the conversations intact.
