What changes in the WhatsApp Business app after connecting

Almost nothing changes on the phone. The same chats, history, contacts and device, and the team answers exactly as before. What changes is that the API is attached to the same line, each side sees what the other sends, and groups are excluded from the API.

  • Same chats, history and device
  • Each side sees the other
  • Three real differences, all small

Group chats available through the API on a Coexistence number.

What stays exactly as it was?

The app, the number, the conversations and the person answering them.

The WhatsApp Business app opens the same way, the contact list is unchanged, and every past conversation is still there. Nobody signs in anywhere new, nobody installs anything, and there is no training. A business that connects a number on Tuesday afternoon has a Wednesday morning identical to every previous Wednesday morning.

This is the entire point, and it is worth being concrete about because the promise sounds too good to businesses that have been offered migrations before.

What genuinely changes?

Three things, and only one of them is visible.

Messages the API sends appear in the app's conversation thread, so whoever is on the phone sees the full picture rather than half of it. That is the visible one, and it is an improvement rather than a disruption.

Messages typed in the app become visible to software, arriving as smb_message_echoes events. Nobody on the phone notices this, but it is what stops automation replying on top of a human who already answered.

And group chats are excluded from the API. The team can still use groups from the app exactly as before; software simply cannot see or send in them, on any provider.

What does the business have to keep doing?

Open the app, which they were going to do anyway.

Meta disconnects a Coexistence connection after roughly fourteen days without activity on the primary device. For a business actively answering customers this never comes up. For a number that goes quiet seasonally, or one an agency holds for a client with a slow month, it does.

The disconnection is recoverable, so it is an inconvenience rather than a loss. The part worth planning for is downstream: the webhook destination is uninstalled along with the connection, so reconnecting restores sending while delivery to your own server silently does not unless it is reapplied.

Common mistakes

  • Promising a team they will not notice, then migrating instead of connecting. Migration removes the app.
  • Building anything around group chats. They are excluded from the API on every provider.
  • Assuming a quiet number stays connected. Fourteen days without the app being opened ends it.
Doing this with EasyCoexistence

EasyCoexistence connects the number through Meta's own flow and then watches it, including reapplying the webhook destination after any reconnection.

Frequently asked questions

Will my team have to learn anything?

No. They keep using the WhatsApp Business app exactly as they do now.

Do I lose old conversations?

No. They stay in the app, and around six months of history can optionally be shared with the API at onboarding.

Can we still use groups?

From the app, yes, exactly as before. Through the API, no, on any provider.

What if nobody opens the app for two weeks?

Meta disconnects the API side. Reconnecting restores it, and the app itself is unaffected throughout.
