Are the open-source WhatsApp MCP servers safe?

They work, and they log in as a linked device, which is against WhatsApp's terms. Numbers are banned for it without warning.

Can an official MCP server read my group chats?

No. Group chats are outside Meta's Cloud API on every official provider, including us.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Ours is a remote server over OAuth, so you add an endpoint and sign in. Nothing runs on your machine.

Search for a WhatsApp MCP server and most results are open-source projects that log into WhatsApp as a linked device. They work, and they put the number at risk. The distinction that matters is not features, it is whether the server talks to Meta's official API.

The open-source projects you will find

Most of the WhatsApp MCP servers on GitHub are built on libraries such as Baileys, WPPConnect or Venom, which reverse-engineer the linked-device protocol. They are genuinely clever, free, and give an assistant access to personal chats and groups that the official API does not expose. The cost is the account: a number banned this way takes the WhatsApp Business profile with it, and there is no support channel to argue through. For a personal number somebody is willing to lose, that trade can make sense. For the number a business answers customers on, it does not.
