Coexistence signup blocked by an old Business Portfolio

If the number is linked to a different Meta Business Portfolio from the one selected in the signup popup, Meta refuses it and says the number is not associated with the business you selected. The number has to be unlinked inside that other portfolio, which needs someone with admin access there, or the flow has to be run in that portfolio instead.

Admin

The portfolio access level Meta requires to create WhatsApp Business accounts in it.

Stays put

After Coexistence onboarding, both WhatsApp accounts remain associated with the client's own business portfolio.

What does Meta say when this happens?

Meta's Embedded Signup error reference lists code 3441041: "The phone number you have entered is not associated with the business you selected. To continue, you need to unlink this phone number from that business or enter a different number."

The business you selected is the Business Portfolio picked on the first screen of the popup. The message means Meta already associates the number with a different portfolio. That link can date from an earlier setup: an agency that once connected the number, a former employee's Business Manager, or an old WhatsApp account created for ads. The person running the flow today often has no idea it exists.

How do you unlink the number from the other portfolio?

Meta's documented resolution has two parts, both carried out inside the portfolio that currently holds the number.

First, remove the WhatsApp account linked to that number: Meta Business Suite, Settings, Accounts, WhatsApp Accounts, Remove Account. Second, delete the phone number itself from WhatsApp Manager, on the Phone Numbers tab.

Both steps happen inside that portfolio, so they need someone with admin access there. Meta already requires admin level permission just to create WhatsApp Business accounts in a portfolio. Once the number is free, run the signup again and select the portfolio you do control.

What if nobody can get into the old portfolio?

Then the realistic options narrow to two.

Regain access first. Whoever created the portfolio, or any remaining admin on it, can add a current person as admin. For an agency-held portfolio, that means asking the agency to either grant access or carry out the unlinking themselves.

Alternatively, run the flow inside that old portfolio once access is restored, rather than moving the number out of it. Coexistence keeps the converted accounts in the client's own portfolio, so whichever portfolio the flow runs in is where the number will live afterwards. Pick the one the business will still control in a year.

Common mistakes

  • Creating a fresh portfolio and retrying. The number is still linked to the old one, so the same refusal comes back.
  • Deleting the WhatsApp Business app account to break the link. The link is held on Meta's side, inside the other portfolio.
  • Leaving the number in a portfolio the business does not control. Whoever administers it controls the connection.
Doing this with EasyCoexistence

EasyCoexistence connects each number inside its owner's own Business Portfolio, and the connection timeline records which portfolio and account Meta returned for every attempt.

Frequently asked questions

Can Meta support move the number for me?

Meta's documented fix for 3441041 is unlinking inside the other portfolio, done by someone with access to it. Meta does not describe moving the number on your behalf.

How do I find which portfolio holds the number?

Meta's message does not name it. Check every portfolio anyone in the business has used, including ones an agency set up.

Will unlinking stop the WhatsApp Business app?

The steps remove the WhatsApp account and number from that portfolio in Meta Business Suite and WhatsApp Manager. The phone app is not where they happen.

Is this the same as the number being on another provider?

No. That is a connection to another partner's app. This is the number belonging to a different portfolio.
