Coexistence error: number already connected to another provider
Meta's Coexistence flow will not connect a WhatsApp Business app number to a new platform while another one still holds it. If the number is already connected to another provider, Meta's signup popup refuses it and says switching partners is not supported in that flow. The business disconnects the current platform in the WhatsApp Business app, waits 15 minutes, then runs the new signup.

Which messages mean the number is on another provider?
Meta's Embedded Signup error reference has three for this situation in the section on WhatsApp Business app user onboarding.
- 2655093: the business is already sharing this WhatsApp Business account with a partner, and switching partners is not supported in this flow.
- 3441049: the number is already registered with the product and must be disconnected from the current account in the WhatsApp Business app.
- 2655094: please disconnect your business platform to continue, then wait 15 minutes before retrying.
How do you disconnect the current provider?
From the phone, in the WhatsApp Business app. Meta's path is Settings, Account, Business Platform, then select the connected platform and tap Disconnect. Meta also notes that the API's own deregistration call cannot be used on a number that is in use with both the app and Cloud API, which is why the disconnection happens in the app rather than through the old provider's dashboard.
When the business disconnects, Meta sends the previous platform an account_update webhook with a PARTNER_REMOVED event. That is how the old provider learns of it. Any subscription with that provider is a separate matter between the business and them.
What happens after disconnecting?
Wait. Meta's messages for 3441049 and 2655094 both say to wait 15 minutes before retrying.
Then run the new platform's signup from the beginning and choose the option to connect the existing WhatsApp Business app account. It is a fresh onboarding: chat history sharing is offered again, and the new platform has 24 hours after onboarding to synchronise contacts and history.
One case can still interrupt the switch. Meta notes that a business which worked with a partner in the past and still shares that partner's credit line may see an error when moving to a new partner, and it publishes a separate guide for resolving it.
Common mistakes
- Asking the old provider to deregister the number. Meta says the deregister call does not work on a number used with both the app and Cloud API.
- Retrying within a few minutes of disconnecting. Meta asks for 15 minutes.
- Deleting the WhatsApp Business app account to break the old connection. Disconnecting in Settings is the documented route.
EasyCoexistence runs a fresh Embedded Signup once the old platform is disconnected, and the connection timeline records the new onboarding and every account_update Meta sends after it.
Frequently asked questions
Can a number be connected to two providers at once?
Not through this flow. Meta's message says switching partners is not supported without disconnecting the current one first.
Will disconnecting delete my chats?
Disconnecting removes the platform connection. The WhatsApp Business app stays on the phone and keeps working.
Can the new provider disconnect the old one for me?
No. The disconnection is done by the business in the WhatsApp Business app.
Does history sync again with the new provider?
The new onboarding offers history sharing again, and the new platform has 24 hours to run the synchronisation.
