Coexistence QR code scan fails in the WhatsApp Business app

When the code scan fails during Coexistence signup, the causes to check are on the phone: an outdated WhatsApp Business app, the scan done from the wrong app or device, or the prompt that follows the scan left unanswered. The fix is to update the app, scan from the WhatsApp Business app on the phone holding the number, and finish every prompt.

2.24.17

Minimum WhatsApp Business app version Meta requires for this onboarding.

PHONE_NUMBER_VERIFICATION

The step Meta reports when a person abandons the flow on the phone verification screen.

4 companions

Linked devices a Business app account can have; all are unlinked when the number connects to the API.

What is supposed to happen on the phone?

Meta's documentation describes the phone side in four moves. The business receives a message from the official Facebook Business account inside the WhatsApp Business app and taps Connect. It taps Connect to the Business Platform. It taps Confirm, which is where it chooses whether to share chat history. Then it completes the verification code step and returns to the browser to finish the flow.

The code shown in the browser is how that conversation in the app gets started, so a scan that does nothing, or a phone that shows an error the moment it scans, means one of those moves could not begin. Everything before it, in the browser, has already worked.

Why does the scan fail?

Four causes are worth checking, in this order.

The app is too old. Meta requires WhatsApp Business app version 2.24.17 or newer, and has an Embedded Signup error, 4563015, that simply says to update the app to the latest version.

The wrong app did the scanning. The code has to be handled by the WhatsApp Business app that holds the number, on the primary phone. Consumer WhatsApp, the phone's camera app, or a linked device such as WhatsApp Web or Desktop is not the same thing.

The prompts were not completed. Scanning only opens the step; tapping Connect, Connect to the Business Platform and Confirm is what moves it forward.

The popup was closed. If the browser window is gone, the flow the phone was completing is gone with it.

How do you retry it cleanly?

Update the WhatsApp Business app from the app store first and reopen it. Make sure the phone in hand is the one that holds the number and that it is unlocked and online.

Then start the signup flow again from the beginning in the browser, choose the option to connect the existing WhatsApp Business app account, and keep the popup open while you work on the phone. Handle the code from inside the WhatsApp Business app, answer each prompt as it appears, and return to the browser to finish.

After the connection completes, expect linked devices to be logged out. Meta unlinks all companion apps when the number connects to the API, and they can be linked again afterwards.

Common mistakes

  • Scanning with the phone's camera app. The code has to be handled by the WhatsApp Business app holding the number.
  • Closing the browser popup while working on the phone. The phone step needs the flow that started it.
  • Treating logged-out linked devices as a failure. Meta unlinks companion apps on connection; they can be linked again.
Doing this with EasyCoexistence

EasyCoexistence runs Meta's Embedded Signup and records where an attempt stopped, so a failed phone step shows up on the connection timeline instead of as a popup that closed with no explanation.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone else scan for the business?

Only with the phone holding the number. The step happens in the WhatsApp Business app on that device.

Can I use WhatsApp Web to scan?

No. Linked devices are companions of the account. The phone step belongs to the primary phone's WhatsApp Business app.

Does a failed scan change anything on the phone?

No. Until the flow completes, the number is not connected and the app works as before.

My app says it is up to date. What next?

Check the version number is 2.24.17 or newer, then restart the flow from the beginning and complete every prompt.
