WhatsApp error 133009: two-step verification PIN entered too quickly

Error 133009 means two-step verification PIN attempts reached Meta faster than it accepts them. Meta's description is "Two-step verification PIN was entered too quickly." The PIN may be right or wrong. Read the details value in the response before trying again, and send the next attempt only after the wait it indicates has passed.

133009

Meta's code for "Two-step verification PIN was entered too quickly."

133008

The related code for too many PIN guesses on one phone number.

6 digits

Length of the PIN that two-step verification requires when registering a number.

What does WhatsApp error 133009 mean?

It means PIN attempts for this number are arriving too close together, and Meta refuses the latest one without judging it.

The Cloud API reference gives 133009 the details text "Two-step verification PIN was entered too quickly" and one instruction: check the details value in the response before trying again.

This sits between two neighbouring codes. 133005 says the PIN was incorrect. 133008 says there have been too many PIN guesses for the number. 133009 is about pace alone, which is why it shows up when a process sends PIN attempts in quick succession, for example a retry loop on a register call.

How do you fix error 133009?

Slow down, and stop guessing.

Read the details value in error_data before the next attempt. Meta's reference describes details as the most likely reason for the error, and for this code it is the first thing Meta tells you to check.

Then make sure the next attempt uses a PIN someone actually knows. If nobody does, Meta's two-step verification guide describes a reset in WhatsApp Manager: open the phone number's settings, choose Two-step verification and click Change PIN. A known new PIN is quicker than a series of guesses that end in 133008 and a longer wait.

Where is the PIN used?

When registering the number for Cloud API, and in a few account operations around it.

Meta's two-step verification guide says the setting requires a six digit PIN when registering the phone number, and the registration call takes the PIN as a required field when two-step verification is enabled. Meta's phone number guide adds that the PIN is needed when changing the PIN or deleting the number from the platform.

Because it is needed rarely, it is easily forgotten. Store it with the business's other account credentials, not with the person who first set the number up.

Common mistakes

  • Retrying the register call immediately in a loop. Rapid PIN attempts are exactly what this code reports.
  • Guessing different PINs between retries. Too many guesses moves you from 133009 to 133008.
  • Ignoring the details value. Meta names it as the thing to check before trying again.
Doing this with EasyCoexistence

EasyCoexistence onboards numbers through Meta's Embedded Signup, which handles the registration step inside Meta's own flow rather than through a hand built register call.
