WhatsApp error 131057: business account in maintenance mode
Error 131057 means the WhatsApp Business Account is in maintenance mode, so requests for it are refused for a short period. Meta's description is "Business Account is in maintenance mode." One reason Meta gives is a throughput upgrade, which takes up to one minute. Wait and retry instead of changing anything in the request.
Meta's code for "Business Account is in maintenance mode."
Maximum time a throughput upgrade takes, during which the number returns 131057.
Fixed throughput for numbers in use with both the WhatsApp Business app and Cloud API.
What does WhatsApp error 131057 mean?
It means Meta has put the WhatsApp Business Account into maintenance mode and is not accepting requests for it at that moment.
The Cloud API reference lists the details text "Business Account is in maintenance mode" and explains that one reason could be a throughput upgrade on the account. The wording one reason matters: Meta names the upgrade as a possible cause, not as the only one.
Nothing in the request is wrong. The same call, sent unchanged once maintenance ends, is expected to go through, which makes this one of the few codes where waiting is the whole fix.
Why does a throughput upgrade cause error 131057?
Because the number is briefly unusable while it is moved to the higher rate.
Meta's throughput guide says Cloud API supports up to 80 messages per second by default and up to 1,000 by automatic upgrade. The upgrade process can take up to one minute, during which the number cannot be used on the platform, and any API request returns 131057. After the first upgrade, later increases happen with no downtime.
The guide lists the eligibility conditions: an unlimited messaging limit on the business portfolio, at least 100K unique users messaged outside a customer service window in a moving 24 hours, and a quality rating of Medium or higher.
Does error 131057 apply to a Coexistence number?
It can appear on any number, but the throughput explanation fits Coexistence numbers less well.
Meta's throughput guide says numbers in use with both the WhatsApp Business app and Cloud API have a fixed throughput of 20 messages per second, to stay compatible with the app. The automatic upgrade to 1,000 described in the same guide applies to numbers on the default level.
So on a Coexistence number, treat 131057 by its literal meaning, an account in maintenance mode, and wait before retrying. If it persists well beyond a few minutes, contact Meta support with the fbtrace_id from the response rather than reconnecting the number.
Common mistakes
- Editing the request. The request is valid, so changes to it cannot help while the account is in maintenance.
- Retrying with no delay. During an upgrade every call within that minute returns the same code.
- Reconnecting the number. Maintenance mode is on Meta's side and ends without any action from the business.
EasyCoexistence reads throughput level alongside quality rating and messaging tier on every connected number, so the rate a number is actually operating under is visible on the dashboard.
